But every movie after that has characters becoming more and more one dimensional

look at each character in mi4, each had a personality ,back story etc their actions are consistent with their  character . 

Like Jane wants to avenge her friends death, Brandt is cold professional , Benji is a tech who's  newly in the  field etc 

In mi7 Benji doesnt even have a good role ,he just keeps running around out of control like a joker ,the tech expertise that was big in MI4 seems irrelevant here

Again, they are using the trick of shocking  the audience using gruesome murder or murder of close people, instead of actual emotional content
