There are many others which start with a different poem, I cannot understand what happen'd.

Now compare and contrast with the opening lines of the Tao Te Ching :

The nameless is the beginning of heaven and Earth.
The named is the mother of the ten thousand things.
Ever desireless, one can see the mystery.
Ever desiring, one sees the manifestations.
These two spring from the same source but differ in name;
this appears as darkness.
Darkness within darkness.
The gate to all mystery.

It is quite possible that Emerson was aware of, or had read , the Tao Te Ching at some point, before producing his text, and that the lines/idea lay quietly in the subconscious, showing up in his writing as though original.

Would Huck Finn be considered a deadbeat by today's standards ? I hope not ..

Sometimes I feel religious practice, especially what Ram Dass describes in Be Here Now,  aims to provide a trippy life without actually purchasing or ingesting anything specifically for it, and shares similarities with the shaman intern fasting & sitting in tents waiting for lights and visions to come ...

When I frame sadhakas as folks desperately working hard to get permanent trippy powers, like the ability to take trips at will, it makes a phenomenal amount of sense . It makes the ritual that religious folks go through, as purposeful now.

There's something for idea that religious practice is something to do with re-training and re-wiring the neural network in your brain so that purpose continues to exist. The 'I' and the voice in your (mind's) ears is just  trace/debug messages from the brain's log file, which  got in front of the brain's headlights.

Fasting is a simple and powerful technique to re-draw the world around you, simply as it exactly was, but two lower degrees of importance . 

Aurobinodo explores the idea that the Vedas pertain to the processes inside the mind , in his this book - Secret of the Veda.

Pirsig, in one chapter of the famous Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, derives the Tao Te Ching as pertaining to when the subject is aware of the object - again, an internal thing , something happening inside one's head.

What if Brahma was nothing more than the pineal gland, so worshipped by Gaia-Pyramids-Area-51 kinda folks  .... ? The word 'brahm' I've seen used in different contexts - in one, it is creation, as in 'what Brahma wrought', but in other, it is a delusion  - as in tamil we say 'adu ellam bramai'. In the Brahma jaala sutra, AJ Brahmali explains that the Brahma Jala is a net to catch views. 
Equating all three - views, delusions, creation - I feel I can confidently hypothesise, that we are referring to that which sits inside our heads and creates our abstractions. Like, a finger when poked, twitches. There is no 'mind' involved, just signal travelling from sensor (skin,muscle) to spine, and a canned voltage response triggering a twitch. However, the human is much more complicated. There is a human sitting inside ones' head - the image of the self, which the brain can include in simulations of multiple disasters. This is where the second arrow hits. see figure.(tbd)

Alan Watts famously remarked once that "Buddhism is Hinduism stripped for export".

We would've naively assumed that we'd have moved the majority of humans past the first 2 Maslow rows. Unfortunately, like a valley, humanity seems to slide into the bottom masses first at every attempt to move past.

There seems to be a single explosion, a seismic centre of philosophy, probably in the Himalayas out of which arose Zen, Vajrayana, the yoga sutras, Shaivism ...

It's hard to read one without seeing the other reflected in the words. Unless, of course, the translator knew only one, and translated the various schools of thought into a single one

This is different from folks whose insulin is faulty, or pancreas doesn't work to make correct insulin or in correct quantities.

If your insulin is fine ,it's a problem of quantity, and having nowhere to put the calories. Hence , burn it while eating less !! easier said than done.

There are powerful homeostatic forces working to keep the equilibrium. 

This is a systems problem.

There are multiple reasons , or forces, ensuring that you eat what you eat and you exercise as you do. 

These range from your social environment to your eco-agro environment to your upbringing to your friends to your job. And last but not least, your self-image - what you identify subconsciously as.

Tools - fasting , exercise, eating low carb ; controlling cortisol using meditation. NLP;  personal development programs to change self image ; different circles of friends and colleagues ..

Imagine, say,  hobos on a subway who have gotten on to the train somehow. They can't get past security at any train station due to some bureaucratic, red-tapey rule that the security follows and no one can change their mind. So they keep turning back the hobos at the gates leading out of the platform and into the terminus. 

So the hobos keep accumulating on some platforms,   some trains are overloaded, some the conductors push off at some platforms increasing the crowding there. Where are these hobos coming from ? (hint :they are the carbs you eat!! )

Adding insulin is just adding more conductors to push them off the train onto the platform, except, on one platform they are full to bursting at the seams and every time the train stops there (automatically- programmed shit these are ), as many get back on the train as they are pushed off...

So go ahead, add more conductors.

I used to feel that way after 1 hr yoga session, in around the time I was working in Strand  

I used to fast on Sundays at one time

I used to finish eating by sunset at one time, after reading 'Critical importance of time restricted eating' by Jason Fung - in which he mentioned a study in which intermittent fasting of 18 hrs helped reverse pre-diabetes in young-ish men

Both these have helped me so far

The Ekadasi diet prescribes a no-grain approach, seems similar in spirit to Keto or Paleo diets -  and the straight line in these matters - the SCD diet

also seems to work

Chan meditation seems to insist on the lotus pose no matter what, and the emphasis on working through the pain - however ,they say the chi rises, in a few years, rising through the stomach, then lungs etc, curing diseases as we go

A Plebspective

 from watching The Americans, what I can conclude is that the US was formed by a bunch of rich successful people who knew what they were doing, and the prosperity continued until the 80s and 90s, showing cracks eventually

the Soviets were on a lurching dash for prosperity,  starting from starving peasantry documented in, say,   Flashman . While they could execute fantastically, the majority of the mindset was not that of the wealthy.

All revolutions that executed the top classes in their country were instinctively tackling what they hated -they 'have's while they were the 'have-not's.

These  have almost always failed (feels good to speak so authoritatively and definitively with no backing credentials whatsoever), or at least struggled until the 'have' mindset kicked in into the masses.

America kept the dream going - and folks could also get rich, for a while, and this is where the others seem lacking

American manufacturing was also a game changer. Drucker somewhere I remember saying the Americans came up during the war due to their management practices - esp training. From this I gather the general idea was of dumb-simple machinery that could allow anyone to be trained to operate them, and a complete lack of unions or Left  allowing for incompetents to persist in the jobs in the name of 'humanity'*

Reading Inspector Singh stories about the South East and East Asia , it's troubling how much death has been dealt out in the name of revolution and progress. Apparently , one thing the White Man got right was the idea implementation of egalite, without gulags.

There's a concept called Pareto-positive. I came across this in the 'cartoon guide to economics' in around 2015? 16 ? I have been reading  'smart' since, say 2001 ? probably not as smart as I thought, However , that's a term or idea I believe that ought to be thrown about a lot more . 'Win-win' as a term has been there for some time , but only in management /consultant jargon, not plebspeak

however, fundamentals are always hidden , by the nature of the beast, and not any malice

the only others I see talking about this, stilling or suppressing the fight-flight-animal, is the likes of Ajahn Brahm and Gaur Gopal Das - their message is to un-conditionally chill - socially very  though they don't cover wealth

Gabriel in the Americans gives me the creeps. He is pure evil ; lying, corrupting and ruthlessly getting work done out of the protagonists. Reminds me of the tech-leads/project-managers early in my career. One of them happily told me in 2004 ? - that there is no more software development going in the world.

The middle-manager is the manifestation of the agent-principal problem. We don't see them as such, but that's what it is. The middle-manager is a broker, plain and simple, but masquerading as one of your own tribe.

Where are we ? we started talking about the Americans then escaped  segued into high-level analysis of Soviet era psycho-economics, with a compare and contrast with the American 'way' during the war2, added a mention of modern-day healthy psycho-economic attitude  name-dropped Drucker, then bashed our famous hate-candidate - the middle managers of the past ... no structure or goal, which is probably well, a bowl of soup is more focussed than a goulash... 

While we're here, I want to name the two latest sources on Asia - Shamini Flint's Inspector Singh series, and the Asianometry youtube series. 

What Asianometry mentioned in one small 5 min segment of the video helped me draw a straight line outline of Japan from the time of Gai-jin to the days of Rising Sun  (and also the mention in Liar's poker)- esp. the social make-up that drove society , and which changed over time.

Aside, Shinto-ism has been compared to Hinduism in some way, and has been said to be used as a tool to build national pride to make Japan into an imperial nation.  A map showing the extent of the Japanese territory during ww2, before the decline, is very impressive - they literally ownd Asia - parts of China, Malaysia, Philippines ... the Byomkesh Bakshi movie has them planning to enter Calcutta via Burma, and providing support to the Indians against the British. In typical Indian fashion, we don't mention Bose's armies lurking beneath the surface, awaiting to overthrow the status-quo.

Will the joy of consuming Bean and Douglas Adams overshadow the anger, sadness, dismay, terror of the negatives of the Raj in India ? Flashman's  Mountain-of-light is an extremely depressing story, lost my appetite at the end of it - and Rudyard Kipling's Kim was the opposite - energising and renewed an appetite for Indian cultural product and architecture

We are way past 500 words but then this is not an essay. An essay starts with the concrete, de-stratifies, and then re-calcifies. We are rambling, wandering , meandering. Not zen-writing -in which we don't edit any.

Asianometry also helped me to understand Korea and their socio-economics better.  The paragons of quality, efficiency and virtue - were/are as corrupt as India, and yet produce more - the take-away is that it's not corruption..

The Inspector Singh brings home the point that the Asia that we know of as Asia broke out from feudalism to communism in the 80s/90s - modernisation notwithstanding - and got aerially bombed by the US, then turned to a modern society. Probably the US tried the same approach to the middle-east expecting a similar result but was unpleasantly surprised when they quickly developed (or revived) their perennial j-crusade

With the abolishment of the gold standard everywhere, the economy is no more a zero-sum game. Inflation is the (literally) cost of that, coupled with growth in product? and services.
Product growth seems to be larger chunkier bulkier carsSUVs, and services seems to be Swiggy that gets you your neighbourhood idli-sambar-chutney for a 50Rs markup and 80Rs delivery/packing/service charge. Also IPOs of loss-makers.

I am piqued by the Qute and the Mahindra e2o than by the behemoths like Harrier and the Morris .There are billions without cars, or basic things, and the world seems focussing on selling to larger and larger cars to bangalore-ites

I keep leaking into ranprieur.com - the dream is to do an into-the-wild without the dying part, apparently mental health improves along with the physical, economy be damned. Then build a cabin of clay and wattles, then write another walden. Living next to a water body is probably the best thing you can do - read the opening of Moby Dick

OOP The Easy Way

I purchased a digital book in three formats with the cash left over on my forex card.

It made me feel good, and gave the promise of a worthy pursuit to me who was wallowing in indulgence, guilt and post-operative invalidity.

Why OOP ? I used to read articles titled "OOP is a horrible disaster that must end " and nod my head all along and wait for civilisation to come crashing down due to OOP so that I could say "ah ! I told you so".

The hour is late and the time is nigh and the industry has consumed OOP with great delight and absolutely no sign of letting up and mostly, all the jobs paying my salary has been on this.
So maybe I am turning into the skid.
Or maybe I am digging my grave a foot deeper .
Time will tell.

revisiting The Matrix in 2021. When Elrond moonlights as an AI program

Nowadays they are just programs.

The movie is slow paced. this is pretty relevant for an era where you had to watch it in theatres, where you have to listen to the lines without the help of a convenient subtitles. You had to listen, or you lost what was said. The action scenes are crisp, yet they are slower than the ones today. Maybe it's just me but movies have gotten faster, with an urge to cram in more and more tropes within a bulging 11/2 - 2 hr window.
Comparing Columbo to Monk can help you see the speed, but also comparing Charlie Chan to Columbo .

Monk has a lot more happening but only a little bit gets shown. With Columbo, and more with Charlie Chan , all thats shown is all that is happening and vice versa.

Each scene in the Matrix is as good as an album cover. Each line has a clean place in the story.

The story evolves nicely along the path of the Hero's Journey. Living a normal life, getting called into an adventure, being told you're the chosen one, discovering powers, finding help, day becomes night and right becomes wrong and up becomes down, a climactic battle, back to normal life , but not as the same person.

The oracle told Trinity that she'd fall in love with the one. 1. there is no need to. humans are the apex predator, and are driven more strongly by negative bias than positivity. hence all mankind will be suspicious of each other, build arsenals, jump at shadows, and once the first shot is fired in fear, the remaining will be in retribution

2. there is no need. the usurial world of finance has already surpassed actual ability of human beings to build, grow, serve. as a result,  real world objects have to start going up in price, so as to match planet finances expectation, so as to get a plausible possibility of return. as a result, regular Joes will be caught in a tidal wave of inflation and will have to go into debt for the very air they breathe. this is sadly no longer a metaphor - runaway debt demands factories to be setup at a runaway pace destroying all natural resources including breathable air and water.

However, weight training is not part of my life at all yet. And fasting, running etc have fallen off, too.  
Aiming to use easy whole body light cardio routines to step up intensity while maintaining a daily routine (most important),  and asanas to limber up  and ease down, until I can do the hard things.
Currently running literally forces me to crash a couple of hours later.
Nobody analyses the human condition like Ran Prieur does. 
For all my working years, I have run to his writings for solace.  He has a couple of pieces on money as debt and fractional reserve banking that are extremely enlightening in the sense it gives you a simple model that works exactly as the large complex world does, and helps you split the world into sensible causes and effects, and help take decisions better.

But of course, his key attraction to me is the "Civilization makes me feel like sh!t" content.

It's impossible to get folks to talk about this, everybody's in a hurry to cut the conversation short when you touch upon this academically.

In my Mumbai days, I was living on literally zero personal space, for four years. That explains the addictions, the destructive patterns , general goal-less-ness and inability to capitalise on opportunities and resources available.

I remember a college senior telling somebody the difference between (then) Mumbai and Pune and this has stuck with me since
- in Mumbai, you close your eyes, fall asleep, and then it's morning already
- in Pune, you'll sleep and sleep and sleep and when you wake up,  born anew , it will be somewhere between 12 and 2 in the night.

Whenever I have been between jobs, I have exercised, maintained health, pursued meaning happily. Woke up in the morning cheerfully.
*** this has been especially true when I did Yoga in my year off.  Going back to work was so difficult when I was so peaceful. So I ended up stopping Yoga classes. In retrospect, that was a downward zag to what had been an awesome zig up.
Something about being employed makes on feel guilty for being happy, or for doing anything constructive for oneself. 

The key here seems to be a difference between what we areI am and what we I need to be.

Progress always happens in lots of meaningless iterations that culminate in a large mad headless rush into something. However, all our social systems work hard to limit it. Students who are too good are asked to slow down. That stops their learning, cos one cannot learn at a pace slower than natural - it depletes the experience of meaning.

Derek Sivers wrote "No speed limits" , and I am still wondering how to inculcate that into my life. (The other thing from Derek Sivers is the art/quantity post. There are many, but these 2 for now)

If I were to believe that all jobs are training, and say for example, by doing this Java job, I'll get to a place where everyone will be using Lisp , (teenhood dreams) , then maybe the quest has meaning, and I'll know what to do with resources I acquire on the way, unlike the cash that is sitting in a bank account cos I don't know what to do with it, nor want to spend on myself cos I don't know if I'll luck it again.

First thing to remember is that you and your environment are separate., to remember that  your destiny winds independently. Maybe correlated maybe intertwined, but never combined. Thus independence of identity is maintained.

Meditation doubles down as a key tool at every stage, by examining every personal thought in neutrality. This gives you power over your mental blocks. 
Exercise helps by improving mood and increasing energy. Also health indirectly. The only way to beat addictions is exercise.

Third is a niche where you live, which echoes your values.

Monday mornings are the best. Infinite potential. 
How many apples can you eat on an empty stomach ?
during the week, the heart becomes silted with guilt and overdue tasks and missed opportunities.

The correct way to reset this is exercise. A brisk jog to raise the heart rate long enough to put you into another state. Food will taste better  then. If you are ordering out too much, remember this trick. Stairs and skipping will work also. 

I need to feel like shit in order to work

A year ago I started eating really healthy for a month.  It felt great, I was full of energy.  

But I couldn't stay in my cubicle. I kept getting up to go somewhere, anywhere else, sneaking outside for fresh air and sun. 

Work suffered. 

When I'm unemployed I eat well, get daily exercise, adequate rest, and I'm generally healthy and feeling fine. 

When I work, I don't. It's not that I don't have the time or the energy at the end of the day, because I totally could keep up with the healthy stuff. 

It's that I need to feel like shit in order to work.

why clojure trips me up

This throws me off.  What is val ?

The keyfn also  supports a whole lot of behaviour such as juxtaposing key1,key2 pairs, sorting by key , sorting by count and a whole lot of others which aren't really part of the documentation of the function itself.

You need to know the rest of the documentation to -get- these.

These seem par for the course, and are probably what fluent programmers would use. Except it's a recursive way to get there.

I came to see the function usage, like a dumb java developer, and got plonked with a short story on sort-by usage patterns. 

That's a learning curve too steep for someone who came expecting some constants or keywords to plugin to my function and get some documented behaviour variation. 

Problem is in Clojure, opening each blackbox is just as much effort as it is to turn a page, but then your mind has to load that function definition too,  and it becomes too much.

I am still struggling with the paradigm shift, ie, constants/keywords etc are just functions and vice versa.

Java typically does dispatch on constants or enum keywords - aka an if -else clause.

Clojure (and functional programs) use functions to decide dispatch..  a function is a constant and a  thing, as opposed to a machine's maw like I imagine in Java

I expect these complaints will disappear linearly with lines-of-code written, and I'll not be confused by seq anymore
