 one of the pages i dipped into during my long desk computer days in mumbai was this one . it's gone, but thankfully wayback machine has a copy. along with reading about linchi and lankavatara sutra on the interwebs, this was a very soothing place to end up in. only later i found out about chade-meng-tan and search inside yourself and the jolly good fellow of google. my best working idea of metta comes from 2-3 lines he said in his speech in the google talks - about the guy inf front of me wants to be happy just like me -  i'm copying the content here for preserving

The Paratrooper

A paratrooper was scared to jump. His instructor told him, "If anything goes wrong, say, `Buddha oh Buddha' and you will be saved."

The paratrooper got so scared that he forgot to pull his rip cord. So he said, "Buddha oh Buddha," and a hand came out and saved him.

He said, "Thank God," and he was dropped.

Driving in India

A monk was driving in India when suddenly a dog crosses the road. The car hit and killed the dog. The monk looked around and seeing a temple, went to knock on the door. A monk opened the door. The first monk said: "I'm terribly sorry, but my karma ran over your dogma."

Compassion with an umbrella

A Western Buddhist woman was In india, studying with her teacher. She was riding with another woman friend in a rickshaw-like carriage, when they were attacked by a man on the street. In the end, the attacker only succeeded in frightening the women, but the Buddhist woman was quite upset by the event and told her teacher so. She asked him what she should have done - what would have been the appropriate, Buddhist response.

The teacher said very simply, "You should have very mindfully and with great compassion whacked the attacker over the head with your umbrella."

Walking on water

Three monks decided to practise meditation together. they sat by the side of a lake and closed their eyes in concentration. Then suddenly, the first one stood up and said, "I forgot my mat." He steeped miraculously onto the water in front of him and walked across the lake to their hut on the other side.

When he returned, the second monk stood up and said, "I forgot to put my the other underwear to dry." He too walked calmly across the water and returned the same way. The third monk watched the first two carefully in what he decided must be the test of his own abilities. "Is your learning so superior to mine? I too can match any feat you two can perform," he declared loudly and rushed to the water's edge to walk across it. He promptly fell into the deep water.

Undeterred, the yogi climbed out of the water and tried again, only to sink into the water. Yet again he climbed out and yet again he tried, each time sinking into the water. This went on for some time as the other two monks watched.

After a while, the second monk turned to the first and said, "Do you think we should tell him where the stones are?"

Two Drunk monks

I took my son, Ian to a farewell party for some friends returning to their country.  Ian, age 9, wisely observed that some of the participants drank too much (I was not among those). On our 1 1/2 hour journey home, I spoke to him about the importance of moderation.

After thinking for sometime, Ian said, "Dad, I have a story that I just made up."

"There were these two Buddhist monks who had about 13 beers each. One had to walk home quite some distance.

'Will you be all right to walk home?', the one asked

'Of course, I will take the Middle Path,' he replied."

Wise blind elephants

Six wise, blind elephants were discussing what humans were like. Failing to agree, they decided to determine what humans were like by direct experience.

The first wise, blind elephant felt the human, and declared, "Humans are flat."

The other wise, blind elephants, after similarly feeling the human, agreed.

Flapping flag

Four monks were meditating in a monastery. All of a sudden the prayer flag on the roof started flapping.

The younger monk came out of his meditation and said:  "Flag is flapping"

A more experienced monk said: "Wind is flapping"

A third monk who had been there for more than 20 years said: "Mind is flapping."

The fourth monk who was the eldest said, visibly annoyed: "Mouths are flapping!"

The other side

One day a young Buddhist on his journey home, came to the banks of a wide river. Staring hopelessly at the great obstacle in front of him , he pondered for hours on just how to cross such a wide barrier. Just as he was about to give up his pursuit to continue his journey he saw a great teacher on the other side of the river. The young Buddhist yells over to the teacher "Oh wise one , can you tell me how to get to the other side of this river"?

The teacher ponders for a moment  looks up and down the river and yells back "My son, you are on the other side" .

A: Go to a monastic university and study for twenty-five years. Begin by memorizing Vasubandhu's Abhidharmakosha with its commentary (500 pages or so). Then study what you have memorised by hearing lectures on it and debating the contents with other candidates until you can argue every side of every controversy equally well. Then memorise several works of Nagarjuna, along with their commentaries. Then memorise the seven treatises of Dharmakirti. In additional to that study, you must master several forms of meditation and study tantric rituals for about two or three years.

Alternatively, you can come to America and just call yourself a lama. Billions of nubile virgins will follow you everywhere and give you money.

which mouth do you eat with

Once there was a monk who was an expert on the Diamond Sutra, and as books were very valuable in his day, he carried the only copy in his part of the world on his back. He was widely sought after for his readings and insight into the Diamond Sutra, and very successful at propounding its profundities to not only monks and masters but to the lay people as well.

Thus the people of that region came to know of the Diamond Sutra, and as the monk was traveling on a mountain road, he came upon an old woman selling tea and cakes. The hungry monk would have loved to refresh himself, but alas, he had no money. He told the old woman, "I have upon my back a treasure beyond knowing -- the Diamond Sutra. If you will give me some tea and cakes, I will tell you of this great treasure of knowledge."

The old woman knew something of the Diamond Sutra herself, and proposed her own bargain. She said, "Oh learned monk, if you will answer a simple question, I will give you tea and cakes." To this the monk readily agreed. The woman then said, "When you eat these cakes, are you eating with the mind of the past, the mind of the present or the mind of the future?"

No answer occurred to the monk, so he took the pack from his back and got out the text of the Diamond Sutra, hoping he could find the answer. As he studied and pondered, the day grew late and the old woman packed up her things to go home for the day.

"You are a foolish monk indeed," said the old woman as she left the hungry monk in his quandary. "You eat the tea and cakes with your mouth."

THE RECORD OF THE LIFE AND TEACHINGS OF WU-MING

Compiled by Master Tung-Wang
Abbott of Han-hsin monastery in the
Thirteenth year of the Earth Dragon period (898)

My dear friend, the most reverend master Tung-Wang,

Old and ill, I lay here knowing that writing this note will be my last act upon this earth and that by the time you read it I will be gone from this life.

Though we have not seen each other in the many years since we studied together under our most venerable Master, I have often thought of you, his most worthy successor. Monks from throughout China say that you are a true lion of the Buddha Dharma; one whose eye is a shooting star, whose hands snatch lightning, and whose voice booms like thunder. It is said that your every action shakes heaven and earth and causes the elephants and dragons of delusion to scatter helplessly. I am told that your monastery is unrivaled in severity, and that under your exacting guidance hundreds of monks pursue their training with utmost zeal and vigor. I've also heard that in the enlightened successor department your luck has not been so good. Which brings me to the point of this letter.

I ask that you now draw your attention to the young man to whom this note is attached. As he stands before you, no doubt smiling stupidly as he stuffs himself with pickled cucumbers, you may be wondering if he is as complete a fool as he appears, and if so, what prompted me to send him to you. In answer to the first question, I assure you that Wu-Ming's foolishness is far more complete than mere appearance would lead you to believe. As for the second question, I can only say that despite so benumbed a condition, or perhaps because of it, still more likely, despite of and because of it, Wu-Ming seems to unwittingly and accidentally serve the function of a great Bodhisattva. Perhaps he can be of service to you.

Allow him sixteen hours of sleep daily and provide him with lots of pickled cucumbers and Wu-Ming will always be happy. Expect nothing of him and you will be happy.

Respectfully,
Chin-Mang

After Chin-mang's funeral, the supporters of his temple arranged for Wu-Ming's journey to Han-hsin monastery, where I resided, then, as now, as Abbott. A monk found Wu-ming at the monastery gate and seeing a note bearing my name pinned to his robe, led him to my quarters.

Customarily, when first presenting himself to the Abbott, a newly arrived monk will prostrate himself three times and ask respectfully to be accepted as a student. And so I was taken somewhat by surprise when Wu-ming walked into the room, took a pickled cucumber from the jar under his arm, stuffed it whole into his mouth, and happily munching away, broke into the toothless imbecilic grin that would one day become legendary. Taking a casual glance around the room, he smacked his lips loudly and said, "What's for lunch?"

After reading dear old Chin Mang's note, I called in the head monk and asked that he show my new student to the monk's quarters. When they had gone I reflected on chin-mang's words. Han-hsin was indeed a most severe place of training: winters were bitterly cold and in summer the sun blazed. The monks slept no more than three hours each night and ate one simple meal each day. For the remainder of the day they worked hard around the monastery and practiced hard in the meditation hall. But, alas, Chin-mang had heard correctly, Among all my disciples there was none whom I felt confident to be a worthy vessel to receive the untransmittable transmitted Dharma. I was beginning to despair that I would one day, bereft of even one successor, fail to fulfill my obligation of seeing my teacher's Dharma-linage continued.

The monks could hardly be faulted for complacency or indolence. Their sincere aspiration and disciplined effort were admirable indeed, and many had attained great clarity of wisdom. But they were preoccupied with their capacity for harsh discipline and proud of their insight. They squabbled with one another for positions of prestige and power and vied amongst themselves for recognition. Jealousy, rivalry and ambition seemed to hang like a dark cloud over Han-shin monastery, sucking even the most wise and sincere into its obscuring haze. Holding Chin-mang's note before me, I hoped and prayed that this Wu-ming, this "accidental Bodhisattva" might be the yeast my recipe seemed so much in need of.

To my astonished pleasure, Wu-ming took to life at Han-shin like a duck to water. At my request, he was assigned a job in the kitchen pickling vegetables. This he pursued tirelessly, and with a cheerful earnestness he gathered and mixed ingredients, lifted heavy barrels, drew and carried water, and, of course, freely sampled his workmanship. He was delighted!

When the monks assembled in the meditation hall, they would invariably find Wu-ming seated in utter stillness, apparently in deep and profound samadhi. No one even guessed that the only thing profound about Wu-ming's meditation was the profound unlikelihood that he might find the meditation posture, legs folded into the lotus position, back erect and centered, to be so wonderfully conducive to the long hours of sleep he so enjoyed.

Day after day and month after month, as the monks struggled to meet the physical and spiritual demands of monastery life, Wu-ming, with a grin and a whistle, sailed through it all effortlessly. Even though, if the truth be told, Wu-ming's Zen practice was without the slightest merit, by way of outward appearance he was judged by all to be a monk of great accomplishment and perfect discipline. Of course . I could have dispelled this misconception easily enough, but I sensed that Wu-ming's unique brand of magic was taking effect and I was not about to throw away this most absurdly skillful of means.

By turns the monks were jealous, perplexed, hostile, humbled and inspired by what they presumed to be Wu-ming's great attainment. Of course it never occurred to Wu-ming that his or anyone else's behavior required such judgments, for they are the workings of a far more sophisticated nature than his own mind was capable. Indeed, everything about him was so obvious and simple that others thought him unfathomably subtle.

Wu-ming's inscrutable presence had a tremendously unsettling effect on the lives of the monks, and undercut the web of rationalizations that so often accompanies such upset. His utter obviousness rendered him unintelligible and immune to the social pretensions of others. Attempts of flattery and invectives alike were met with the same uncomprehending grin, a grin the monks felt to be the very cutting edge of the sword of Perfect Wisdom. Finding no relief or diversion in such interchange, they were forced to seek out the source and resolution of their anguish each within his own mind. More importantly, and absurdly, Wu-ming caused to arise in the monks the unconquerable determination to fully penetrate the teaching "The Great Way is without difficulty" which they felt he embodied.

Though in the course of my lifetime I have encountered many of the most venerable progenitors of the Tathagata's teaching, never have I met one so skilled at awakening others to their intrinsic Buddhahood as this wonderful fool Wu-ming. His spiritual non-sequiturs were as sparks, lighting the flame of illuminating wisdom in the minds of many who engaged him in dialogue.

Once a monk approached Wu-ming and asked in all earnestness, "In the whole universe, what is it that is most wonderful?" Without hesitation Wu-ming stuck a cucumber before the monks face and exclaimed, "There is nothing more wonderful than this!" At that the monk crashed through the dualism of subject and object, "The whole universe is pickled cucumber; a pickled cucumber is the whole universe!" Wu-ming simply chuckled and said, "Stop talking nonsense. A cucumber is a cucumber; the whole universe is the whole universe. What could be more obvious?" The monk, penetrating the perfect phenomenal manifestation of Absolute Truth, clapped his hands and laughed, saying, "Throughout infinite space, everything is deliciously sour!"

On another occasion a monk asked Wu-ming, "The Third Patriarch said, "The Great Way is without difficulty, just cease having preferences." How can you then delight in eating cucumbers, yet refuse to even take one bit of a carrot?" Wu-ming said, "I love cucumbers; I hate carrots!" The monk lurched back as though struck by a thunderbolt. Then laughing and sobbing and dancing about he exclaimed, "Liking cucumbers and hating carrots is without difficulty, just cease preferring the Great Way!"

Within three years of his arrival, the stories of the "Great Bodhisattva of Han-hsin monastery" had made their way throughout the provinces of China. Knowing of Wu-ming's fame I was not entirely surprised when a messenger from the Emperor appeared summoning Wu-ming to the Imperial Palace immediately.

From throughout the Empire exponents of the Three Teachings of Buddhism, Confucianism and Taoism were being called to the Capitol, there the Emperor would proclaim one to be the true religion to be practiced and preached in all lands under his rule. The idea of such competition for Imperial favor is not to my approval and the likelihood that a religious persecution might follow troubled me greatly. But an order from the Emperor is not to be ignored, so Wu-ming and I set out the next day.

Inside the Great Hall were gathered the more than one hundred priests and scholars who were to debate one another. They were surrounded by the most powerful lords in all China, along with innumerable advisors, of the Son of Heaven. All at once trumpets blared, cymbals crashed, and clouds of incense billowed up everywhere. The Emperor, borne on by a retinue of guards, was carried to the throne. After due formalities were observed the Emperor signaled for the debate to begin.

Several hours passed as one after another priests and scholars came forward presenting their doctrines and responding to questions. Through it all Wu-ming sat obliviously content as he stuffed himself with his favorite food. When his supply was finished, he happily crossed his legs, straightened his back and closed his eyes. But the noise and commotion were too great and, unable to sleep, he grew more restless and irritable by the minute. As I clasped him firmly by the back of the neck in an effort to restrain him, the Emperor gestured to Wu-ming to approach the Throne.

When Wu-ming had come before him, the Emperor said, "Throughout the land you are praised as a Bodhisattva whose mind is like the Great Void itself, yet you have not had a word to offer this assembly. Therefore I say to you now, teach me the True Way that all under heaven must follow." Wu-ming said nothing. After a few moments the Emperor, with a note of impatience, spoke again, "Perhaps you do not hear well so I shall repeat myself! Teach me the True Way that all under heaven must follow!" Still Wu-ming said nothing, and silence rippled through the crowd as all strained forward to witness this monk who dared behave so bold a fashion in the Emperor's presence.

Wu-ming heard nothing the Emperor said, nor did he notice the tension that vibrated through the hall. All that concerned him was his wish to find a nice quiet place where he could sleep undisturbed. The Emperor spoke again, his voice shaking with fury, his face flushed with anger: "You have been summoned to this council to speak on behalf of the Buddhist teaching. Your disrespect will not be tolerated much longer. I shall ask one more time, and should you fail to answer, I assure you the consequence shall be most grave. Teach me the True Way that all under heaven must follow!" Without a word Wu-ming turned and, as all looked on in dumbfounded silence, he made his way down the aisle and out the door. There was a hush of stunned disbelief before the crowd erupted into an uproar of confusion. Some were applauding Wu-ming's brilliant demonstration of religious insight, while others rushed about in an indignant rage, hurling threats and abuses at the doorway he had just passed through. Not knowing whether to praise Wu-ming or to have him beheaded, the Emperor turned to his advisors, but they were none the wiser. Finally, looking out at the frantic anarchy to which his grand debate had been reduced, the Emperor must surely have realized that no matter what Wu-ming's intentions might have been, there was now only one way to avoid the debate becoming a most serious embarrassment.

"The great sage of Han-hsin monastery has skillfully demonstrated that the great Tao cannot be confined by doctrines, but is best expounded through harmonious action. Let us profit by the wisdom he has so compassionately shared, and each endeavor to make our every step one that unites heaven and earth in accord with the profound and subtle Tao."

Having thus spoken the Son of Heaven concluded the Great Debate.

I immediately ran out to find Wu-ming, but he had disappeared in the crowded streets of the capitol.

Ten years have since passed, and I have seen nothing of him. However, on occasion a wandering monk will stop at Han-hsin with some bit of news. I am told that Wu-ming has been wandering about the countryside this past decade, trying unsuccessfully to find his way home. Because of his fame he is greeted and cared for in all quarters with generous kindness; however, those wishing to help him on his journey usually find that they have been helped on their own.

One young monk told of an encounter in which Wu-ming asked him, "Can you tell me where my home is?" Confused as to the spirit of the question. The monk replied, "Is the home you speak of to be found in the relative world of time and place, or do you mean the Original Home of all pervading Buddha nature?"

After pausing a moment to consider the question, Wu-ming looked up and, grinning as only he is capable, said, "Yes."

Why did Bodhidharma go to the Internet?

An amusing post from Professor Richard P Hayes, Mcgill University culled from bitnet. [Ed - I have great respect for Bodhidharma as an Enlightened One. However, I feel that one really good way to respect a guru is to laugh at and with him/her.]

Subject: Why did Bodhidharma go to the Internet? In fact in the investigation of Bodhidharma we find that he may be an Iranian Prince.

It seems a little bit odd to use the expression "in fact" in front of any statement about Bodhidharma, unless the rest of the sentence is "Bodhidharma probably did not exist as an historical person." The consensus of scholarly opinion, I have heard from usually reliable sources, is that Bodhidharma is fictional character. That being the case, one can tell any story one likes about him. Indeed, the history of Chan is filled with wonderful stories that people have made up about Bodhidharma.

The story I like best is the one that makes him a South Indian. I like this version for no better reason than that I am partial to South Indians, maybe because two of my most beloved teachers were Tamil and Telugu. (Ever heard of a Tamil Theravadin Zen Buddhist? They're about as rare as Canadian Sautraantikas, but a hell of a lot more polite.) Moreover, nearly all the really great Buddhist thinkers, such as Naagaarjuna, Dignaaga, Dharmakiirti and Buddhaghosa, were Tamil or Telugu. For the sake of economy of admiration, I find it convenient to think that Bodhidharma must also have come from the same part of India; this saves me a lot of time and money on pilgrimages, because I only have to go to one place to pay respects to every Buddhist whose thinking has shaped my understanding of Buddhism. (I'm currently gathering a mountain of evidence that proves beyond a shadow of doubt that the Buddha himself was born, became enlightened, taught the dharma and died in Tamilnadu. Of course people will scoff at this evidence at first, since I am making most of it up, but I suspect that within fifty years people will start believing in it. Nobody gets a PhD in Buddhist studies from McGill unless they sign a statement affirming their belief that the Buddha came from Madras instead of Magadha.)

The story of 9 years facing a wall is a interesting one, but almost contraidcts the Teachings that are associated with Bodhidharma who thought Still Sitting or wall gazing as a total waist of time.

Never realized time had a waist before. But it does make a lot of sense, when you recall that it comes from hourglasses.

As for the wall-gazing, some historians have suggested that what little evidence there is about Bodhidharma suggests that he really might have been a Brahmin from Tamilnadu who converted to Buddhism and travelled to southern China (or perhaps what is now Viet Nam) by boat. There he is thought to have taught the four foundations of mindfulness. He gained a reputation for giving short, snappy and slightly incoherent answers to questions, probably because he did not speak Chinese very well and could not easily express himself fully. His command of Chinese was not helped at all by the fact that he lived as a hermit in a cave for nine years, so he continued giving abrupt and seemingly incoherent answers for most of his life. The Chinese, wanting to help this inarticulate foreign monk save face, politely spread the rumour that Bodhidharma was very wise. The rest, as they say, is history.

Meeting D.T. Suzuki

While I was at UCLA, D.T.Suzuki (the famous Zen scholar, writer, master, etc) came to visit. They set up the Regents auditorium for him. So we were all there, the audience all excited, and out came the head of the Oriental department. The audience all quited down. The Head introduced "Here is D.T.Suzuki, world class Zen scholar, writer, master, etc..here he is!"

We all sat in silence. This little guy comes out to the mike. Adjusts a pair of Glasses. This is him, we've seen pictures of him before, but he looks smaller and etc. He reaches out and taps the mike.

A hollow ping sounds though the hall. He says "Zen Buddhism, Very hard understand, Thank you" and walks off stage.

The audience went crazy! There was a mad struggle backstage, and then The Head lead Suzuki back out, a couple of the department professors with him. They set up some chairs, sat Suzuki down and asked him questions for an hour so everyone would be satisfied.

But I can still hear his voice "Zen Buddhism, Very hard understand............ "

 you need to practice until meditation is your day job, and life is everything else that is just noise, that happens in the gaps

this is the meditation inversion

to begin with, one can aim for a physical/exercise inversion as a pre-step

zazen's method is 'just-sitting', and letting things come and go. there are tons of lectures but they are all of the 'while you inhale, you are actually exhaling, while you are sitting,  you are also standing up' kind. compared to this, ab is a more warm and fuzzy

the only structure zen imposes is form, and the very act of dropping everything in our busy minds and sititng vacantly seems daunting, and we impulsively flinch and back off ...

 ajahn brahm's thai forest method is a more elaborate in terms of literature but the core message is 'open the door of your heart' to the thing in front of you - whether it's an irritant or yourself - and be kind to it.

with this , almost everything opens up and simmers down, and all the literature - whether suttas or sermons -  is just gravy on top.

the meditation is mileston-ed with things like beautiful breath, nimittas, jhanas etc and provide a 'thing', while zen has nothing to hold on to

comparing the two, zen seems more 'intellectual' effort, to maintain the 'effort of no effort choice of no choice', eventually whittling our own effort to keep even this away to until it barely exists but doesn't not exist  (i suppose) whereas the ab method is to just turn towards and hug whatever is in front of the mind

the third contender is vipassana. 10-day camp attendees have reported bliss on the third day from just eating and being outside. gemini puts it down to dopamine-fasting effects of 3 days of painful anapana practice and bland food. youtubers report that scientific studies show that 10 day course caused permanent or almost permanent structural change in the brain (intensity matters?)

shinzen young tells us that attention power is something that can increase by training and practice. one technique he suggests for dealign with strong emotion is to hold on to the emotion when it hits, and observe where in the body it shows up, what it feels like, and what is its flavour/texture etc

finally, buddhism seems like something someone would derive if they followed a common-sensical approach, though there's no guarantee that every one would end up follow the same path of enquiry, but i would expect to end up there eventually

 how about .. "we are but mechanisms to accumulate layers of matter so that a brain emerges. each brain tries to make sense of the universe, and this is a terribly attenuating thing,  so the brain wears out, rather, the material accumulation is not enough to keep the brain 'playing the latest version of the game', so the already accumulated material layers sanction a branch-off operation with lesser/different 'sense' so that the new brain can start where the old one left off ..,  parallely dialing down resource allocation to the existing piles of material"

 P.o.I first seasson is a peach. the ulrich kohl episode is gigantic. the man is a mirror of our man, slight differences. can't help love the suit/pinstripes/surgical technique ...

how do you know I would pull the trigger

you're a soldier like me ....

words which are red hot iron poured down the spine ...

quality falls to the level of  gas station tacos in later seasons ... and i hate the whole samaritan runaround ...

 people keep saying there is this consciousness that consciousness etc ... time is the only real organism in this universe, going through everywhere, carrying everything

think of the speed of light, and how things change when one travels at speeds close to it- it's because light can't see beyond what time has not created yet ...

corollary : time travel is only possible to 'scenes' or realities you have been in already, the rest are not real for you, but within your timeline, time can remake things for you...

 one of these things is not like the other

I was reading Osborne  when I came upon Nietsche... ( how did the shift occur ? I remember Lisa Lisa in the bombardiers reading nietsche to help with the job, ( weird book - contrarian/non-standard perspective for that world but not really touching bedrock I felt ) , I have been using Power as my first Wordle attempt, maybe I googled 'will to power' or something... )

turns out, nietsche's philosophy is the wind right underneath Adler, Jung, Frankl, Sartre, Camus, Focault, Kafka, Hesse, Shaw, and also ....  Batman .... and of course, the life is difficult theme in our recent resort - Scott Peck....

Gemini has given a four book reading list, will to power not on it.

Will to power starts with an observation that .....the distinguishing feature of our nineteenth century is not the triumph of science, but the triumph of the scientific method over science.

btw, Sherlock Holmes was a 'scientific-method'-ist first,  a detective later , the method amplified his talents and if you remember , if he weren't to be a detective, he'd have been a thief ( the tv series say pirate) , and while Doyle's stories are more pulp , The Philosophy of Sherlock Holmes identifies Victorian thought as the ground which gives rise to the bloom that resides at 221b... the squarest of the squares (hence the sener at women). A similar model was put forth by Jules Verne in Around the world in 80 days , a man who can plan a project so big ( a trip around the world) in precise steps and times .....

 cartesian abstraction as the source of square-ism, wholism was lost/ignored ( his-story/leviathan), deleuze - the latest knight of the method ?

 religion and alcohol , descartes and god, afterlife as opium, Deida's superior man advise about naked unadorned life (no scrolling on the pot) .... eastern religions help you go into the pain, western religions avoid

there is the thread of suffering tht runs through all the works of men

Puff the fractal dragon caught the error and Grew from naught again. Can you turn shit to sugar ? Or will you brood and get depressed at the unfairness of life, can turn your sorrows into wind of your sails ..

 There is only one treasure, and that is the self, from/to which all joys flow

 Person Of Interest is Matrix meets Enemy of the State

And jn 2026,  it hasn't aged at all ...

Wednesday, May 13, 2026

 was reading osborne's book on the maharishi's teachings. there's a dialogue with  a jesuit , who asks questions like 'i am finite, god is infinite.... how can i know god' , and then it hit where I had heard this before...

 DAVID
		What was your idea Elijah?

Beat.

				 ELIJAH(soft)
		If there is someone like me
		in the world, and I'm at one
		end of the spectrum...
		Couldn't there be someone
		the opposite of me, at the
		other end?
			(beat)
		A person who can't be hurt
		like the rest of us. A kind
		of person they were talking
		about in those stories.

Elijah points at the framed comic sketches.

				 ELIJAH(soft)
		A person they believed was
		put here to protect the rest
		of us. Guard us.

and then I remembered what this sounded like ... this is actually just a rehash of Descartes' argument for the existence of God ...

so it looks like armies have been , since forever, carrying these arguments in their arsenal, persuading millions into membership by the simple device of looking decent, claiming to be holy, and presenting logical arguments ....

can you spot the fallacy in this ? would you be immune ?

 the human is like the hand

what he grasps he becomes

the hand that can let go

can grasp anything

 pro-tip while meditating - since one needs to suppress the fault-finding mind, we just need to remember when we do meditation wrong, for eg, no zafu, no mudra, no 10 min -  so that it automatically becomes a full valid session !

 If you jump up fast enough and turn around, would you be able to see yourself in the past moment ? Youll have to whip faster than the speed of light though ... and become momentsrily infinitely heavy so that all yomama jokes suddenly become about you....

I think of light (or the speed of it ) as a primal consciousness; speeding it up causes time to slow down, ask any meditator ....

Meditation doesnt reverse ageing, a meditator has moved less through time, hence has aged less...

Similarly i think of the Huayen jewel net as  where each jewel is a shard of consciousness reflecting imperfectly.... as they 'purify' they becme clearer and clearer , and eventually turn invisible then insubstantial, dissolving into the substrate which turns out to be ..... more consciousness itself until everything collapses into a single point of itness.the world as we know it ,not being percieved anymore,  disappears snap,  like an old.memory...

Now reading intro to mahamudra (tibetan)

 The journey is the destination

Therefore the ticket price is the integral of infinite sub journeys to each point in the journey, limit tending to zero and all that, yknow, and thanks to Zeno, we'll never arrive. Therefore, to arrive wt a destination is to never have travelled....

1 . god is infinite.

2. infinity contains the back of your head

3. you cannot see the back of your head

 hence, you can only know infinity minus the back of your head, which is mathematically, still infinity

therefore, when you do transcend, you can leave the back of your head behind

corollary : the back of your head is irrelevant

lemma : a person or conscious entity, when made entirely of backs of human heads, cannot achieve enlightenment

 buddhist sankaras are but yoga's samksaras

ability to compartmentalise mind space, and work in that mind space is a hard skill, especially if the compartment is to survive environment changes , like , beyond a room or office ... once this ability develops, the ability to de-compartmentalise gains importance ...

buddhism is therapy disguised as a religion ?

if doctors sold health, they would test insulin levels, but since they sell only cures, they test for sugar levels, something that justifies a prescribing

 i read matt might on gaining strength ( after reading matt might on weight loss), then i read sivers' summary on rippetoe  . But originally, I read some of Steve Maxwell's posts on this site, during a Singapore visit I'm sure ( or Kodai ? same as Jason Fung - something about these visits unlock a deep running current ...) and was impressed greatly by the combination of strength training, chi/prana, and minimalism as a way of life...

then i watched some baron videos on soviet training and diet

now started doing dumbell bicep curls (5) whenever bored, or short on time and ideas for a workout...

yoga is the keystone habit and practice that makes all this possible, allowing for some level of strength and moving me beyond the man with body of clay

after yoga, one is able to do some skipping in the morning. Usually in the mornings  (not mondays), the body is so stiff, that one needs a routine to un-stiff it. I wanted Shubananda's original starter 4 to fill this spot but too stiff. Now I do 3 sets of skipping -50,50,100, then wushu arm rotations, then if I remember, leg stretches, then Indian squats. These set the tone for the morning, and then dumbells become easily possible.

Johnnie let's me visit Enter Sandman like I was 18(Johnnie W not mnemonic)

I was listening to my 'van halen balance' playlist, for the rock/metal section, which i have almost never done ( i wonder why) ,  and i started playing metallica ...

it took me to the time when had one pair of good jeans, and one good white t-shirt with printed stuff on it,  when I had a passable cassette player, and had just graduated past boney M and beatles ....  rock and metal were a gateway to the magnificent magical vibe of electric guitars, speakers, and music that promised a world wrought entirely out of attitude and authentic strength. a world with music with rocks in it .... ,  far from the real world which put in boredom brick by brick, every minute every hour .....

I remember G with his stereo upstairs of S's house, with his cassette collection that I thought was literally heaven .... judas priest, stone temple pilots(core - the other album was experimental mmkay ?), anthrax .... Metallica was _just_ a gateway drug there ... Iron Maiden were posers with some good stuff ...

wherever I may roam ... we wrote this on soul paper deep within our minds, as we chewed through the days curriculum, roaming carefully amongst places we were allowed to roam ...

i wonder where this is all going, i wonder where my life strayed beyond repair ...

nowadays there's only talk of four bedrooms, and villas, and seven seaters ....

as they said, sad but true....

 Sets, by virtue of their nature, give rise to sets that don't have their  ature

Categories do the same

In the human sphere, a protocol essentially boils down to a list of  things to be kept in mind

And so each gives rise to cousin protocols and cou ter protocols

There is no end to this, the engine of variety,  similarity and variation driven in an endless dance of novelty on a bed of boring regularity,

Todays novelty becomes  tomorrows regularity, as sets accumulate sets , and strive to gobble all, and plug the perennial leakage

blends

nature of samsara  / dharma  = Kopp's eschatological laundry list

8 fold path = scott peck's 4 tools of discipline

additional material / visuddimagga = Pirsig's Gumptionology and traps

 i can now admit to myself that i need more space and more consistent routines to thrive, and that the onus of running interference to the rest of the world while i get mine, is upon me, although i don't know how i will do both.

it's like one is firing the camera shutter and then running to get into the frame before the flash goes off. still... cards dealt play mumble mumble

an old book has resurfaced, that i had read and discarded as too shallow. one passage caught my attention - about a Tibetan medicine man in bangalore treating the author for respiratory problems. hmmm.... man thinks like me

modern medicine is a side effect of industrial culture. the industrial economy reduces humans to single point sources of economic output. the industrial society stratifies to enforce this role as early as possible, and tries to keep it going as long as possible. the so-called 'metabolic syndrome' is an offshoot of this behaviour - of running a complex system such as a human for a long enough time without required 'maintenance', or as we humans call it, rest, rejuvenation, and recreation. Very unlike machines which require fuel and lubrication regularly, and replacement of parts at regular intervals, human 'machines' are regenerating, and do so by wholistic reconnection with nature, people, and purpose, something the industrial economy doesn't understand, or chooses not to. as a result of its insistence to run humans as machines, we have humans with appendixes cut off, metal pins in their bodies holding together worn out bones, tired pancreas not allowed to rest, but forced to work till destruction... entire generations living on low quality nutrition marketed as the exact opposite,  while machines rob us of the need to use our legs , speeding us downhill to a surfeit of 'metabolic syndrome' ...

rationally there are safeguards in place for every scheme, and yet, the leviathan's teeth always find a way to morally and physically insulate themselves from the effect of the ideology they impose on the rest. in theory, every process has quality control and foolproofing, and in practice, each of these are circumvented whenever needed . in practice, systems exist in a state of anergy, and failure is the default mode . the creation of digital machines has created an economically better-off-than-before, but nonetheless intellectual serfs.

economics is politics, politics is the game theory of class warfare, collective bargaining etc, which has roots in biology and physiology, and degrees of freedom, which has roots in biology, and chemistry, and geography. ultimately we are sophisticated cavemen whacking each other on the head with symbolic clubs of large cars, designer labels, swanky apartments etc, while laying a larger claim to the mammoth carcass..

surely, there must be some evolutionary progress made beyond this by us over so many years ..... ?

not compassion and love - these are part of the mammalian chassis.

transcending is just having your state machine become a cycle or a part of a larger state machine. this has always been the case. transcending requires the larger state machine to be a new one.

advaita something something ?

traditional medicine something something  ?

a good measure of devotional practice is that after some time, it should make one light of heart and joyous in disposition at all times, and the rituals merely become outbursts of expression of this joy. the exerciser eventually starts enjoying exercise and relapses into it whenever circumstances, like muddy water, clear up after a time. it must be the same with any practice. else it's an imposition and or addiction.

the sea of difference between addiction and addition is just the letter 'c'

 have you ever been to the ghost market, to hire a ghost to haunt that apartment you owned, so as to get the tenant to leave ?

 What is the shape of the universe

We dont know cos we havent seen the edges/boundaries where it ends

If the universe ends at some point, has a boundary,  what lies beyond?

We cannot know. If we did, then the boundary would push further to just beyond that point.

Then the boundary of the universe is also the limit of our knowledge?

No, not the limit of our knowledge , but the limit of our comprehension... otherwise the boundary would show up while we are in deep sleep, or at the back of our head.. the boundary of the universe that we know, is , syllogistically, the limit of what we know.

Does space disappear when we sleep ?

 No we sleep in space. If it were to disappear, we wouldn't wake.

What if it did and we woke but are living a dream ?  A fragment of consciousness and memories without a matter component ?

Who would know the difference ? Can consciousness move a physical object ? Can it press a switch ?

It cannot, but it can imagine a switch, and imagine it pressed...

But it would know that it is doing the pressing and percieving the pressing

What if it split itself just before the pressing, that it didnt know it did the pressing ?

 There is no shortage of wealth in this world - of leisure, of dignity, affection ... what this world lacks is a wealth of credit, and in the sisyphean endeavour to even out the distribution of this, real wealths have been destroyed, not looted, destroyed.

I have a tendency to shut off completely, and go along with whatever is in vogue in the current micro-society ( meaning bunch of two-three people I am around)

as a result, I have no continuing efforts or results, on the ground. In my mind - yes, but not on the ground.

I also have developed the ability to not complete any task set before me. I blame this squarely on this phase of life not being built on bedrock, but off of other people's roofs or walls. The hesitancy to commit given the lack of bedrock or sky, has run for decades now, and half-assery is now detectable in my blood cells, under a microscope.

This gives me considerable unease, which can be masked by eating, reading blogs, doing THAT one thing to keep the nearest boss happy, while slow-death-ing the soul work.

Jeepley goes around

 Jeepley got off the boat and tested his legs on terra firma, glad that they held, then quickly walked to dock office. It was deserted,  as was the road outside - no taxis or buses. The faded timetable in the office  said the minibus was expected at 4 and he had an hour to kill by then. He sat down on the single bench, and looked out over the water. The plan was still going as per schedule.

The minibus dropped him off at a section of the road which looked exactly the same as any other, while the driver gave him instructions  . Walking through two wooded plots, which he was sure was someone's estate- he was trespassing no less, he turned left at the heap of coloured rocks, and climbed up the slope to the cottage. It came into view after a turn in the road. It was a pretty road, with large trees on either side, and the sky was blue,   that he forgot all of the City  as he huffed up the path,   with  an eye on the loose stones.

The key was under the mat. He let himself in. He met the other guests at tea time. A pair of glasses read a book,  immobile except to occasionally turn a page . A grey sweater smoked a cigarette on a chair in the garden.A squirrel ran up a tree, being late for its tea perhaps.

 The housekeeper manifested in the kitchen at sunset, and began to cook. At the dinner table, Jeepley looked around to see if a Queegeeg would show, chuckling mentally.

The ship was expected to cross the town in a day or two. Lots would happen then. Until then there was dinner and a walk.

I have a soft corner in heart for Rudyard Kipling's Kim (the more  I think about it, the more I believe my heart is entirely made of soft corners, with no hard center) .When I read Kim I of course put myself in his shoes. When i read any Holmes story, it takes me to a safe & predictable world where truth and good prevail.  I recently read Mary Russell's The Game ( Laurie King) . It didn't disappoint( unlike Doyle, the plot isn't linear, but meanders and regularly submerges itself in the background ...)

The story follows Holmes & Russell's search for a missing Kim in an Indian princely state. They find him, Kim has a child now - a boy - who joins their adventures, they are captured , rescued, and afterwards, Kim disappears into the mountains.

Now to have Kim grow up, have a son ( me too), and then disappear into the hills - makes me feel like I am losing myself ,that i am somehow free no more, and will have to work to the whims of the world from now on.. I feel like every bus ride is a imposition, so every car ride, every interaction forced, and every meal a passing compromise. Escape comes in the form of books (like the Game), or tv now and then, but then the chains slip back. An inversion has occurred - earlier, I used to throw off the yoke of work at home, and would be free. now like air, that  yoke has permeated every moment , and it's not just work, but the responsibility of it ,for others, for small ones, and old... the self is feeling so neglected

edit : 14 Mar addition

In 'Kim', the llama returns to the mountains after vainly seeking his river in the plains. That felt a bit.  Now after the reunion, we lose Kim too, and while Holmes can return to 221 Baker street ( did you know it was just two bedrooms and a sitting room, no more ? I knew but didn't 'know' know ....  I do now...).

I have neither the mountains nor 221b.  I feel like when we set out on a train journey with my friends, and halfway, they got off midway, for an adventure, leaving me to continue amidst unfeeling strangers... carrying the fast fading memories of the bonhomie and the rush of youthful exuberance. College was a bubble where dreams took birth, avoiding and barely surviving the pre-liberalisation vibe of home and school. Job was where the dreams took root and put forth tender leaves. Now, having baked in the city for donkey's years, ground to a dust, body and soul past rebelling, the bare rememberance of the dreams' existence  causes panic and palpitations. I refuse to step down from my mind world, and be part of this tissue of life of this city... and yet I cannot do anything else... day by day, breath by breath I am pushed to the edges, from thereof to become the landscape, the uncle, the local, whom the kids dream of escaping, into worlds gotten through their books and series'... and  I used to be them, and haven't made my escape yet. coming home to my parents' world , taking up their roles,  is bittersweet, but also heartbreaking, also gloomy beyond description, soulless void , dark and despondent..

the people who made me, some are gone in this world, some in other ways... who will know who I am what I was ,... what am I without them, was I ever anything ?

 We are all but computer programs coded and run by a curious programmer, running within a single for-loop, living our lives one processor op at a time. When we sleep is when the processor runs other threads -other peoples lives. Whixh is why, in this day and age, with all the hustle and run run run life, we dont get much done , and our efforts are neber enough, because ,collectively we are all sleeping too less to allow the Processor to complete enough tasks. So the necessities of each are piled up like cars on the bangalore road, awaiting bandwidth. So sleep more!

If this continues , there will be a culling of zombie threads soon

 is there a spot on the Earth, or in the Universe, where there's no space ? (not talking mumbai...)

a black hole comes close, using gravity to cheat...

is there a place in this universe where time doesn't exist ?

what if we're all just sleepwalking towards the moment the lamp in the corner starts to look weird ...

as Alan Watts said, what would it feel like, to wake, having never gone to sleep ...

btw, did you know Laurie King has a pastiche of Sherlock Holmes meets Kim ? great fun it is ...

"When everyone is dead the Great Game is finished. Not before. "

 - Hurree Babu (Kim, Rudyard Kipling)

I bought Bells of Shangri-La

found it to be terrible .terrible. I feel like someone took the diary of the original Hurree Babu and tacked on many many  passages of high school level flowery-ness, and shipped it off to the presses without an editor looking at it...

felt a pang that I was one of those types who don't return things

that frontier has always been a source of great fascination

starting from Tintin in Tibet, Rudyard Kipling's Kim,  The Mandala of Sherlock Holmes, Seven years in Tibet, Magic and Mystery in Tibet ...

all grist for the mill

honest confession. I haven't read past chapters 1-2 of a couple of these...

something about the place whispers "magic!"

 Cryme at the Ancient Marina

Pour me another !!

--- ye old sea dog, at the pub,  after rum

There was a knock on the door. I opened it. A man, well-dressed, navy-blue jacket, large moustache.

Severe.

"... Mr Lortek ?" He said. I espied a folded badge in the hand he held to his waist.

"Yes ?'

"Hello. I'm from the L.E.S.T.R.A.D.E department. My name is Edward Devarian."

I smiled .

 "You mean you work for Inspector Lestrade ? "

"No. "

A grimace forced into a smile, glimpse of teeth.

"err.. what ..what is L.E.S..what can I do for you ?"

"I believe you just graduated from the Sherlock Holmes Academy on Deductive Sciences and Technique, two days ago ?"

I frown

"No,  that was a package tour and program two days ago, I explain,  we got to solve some staged cases, were served cold beef and ale, sat in armchairs and  smoked pipes, and played the fiddle some.."

"I assure you, it was a program, but not staged in any way, and completely legitimate. Would you be able to help us in a case which has been baffling the department for some time now ?"

"Is this part of the program ? "

"No."

"Can I meed Inspector Lestrade ? "

"No. He was a fictional character. Also, we are not in the 1900s any longer."

...

...

"ok, I charge 2 guineas and 1 bob and 1 quid per day."

"Again,  Sir, I assure you, this is not staged, or part of any program "

 If you ran into yourself today, would you get along ?

Would you be able to co exist  or would you get on each others  nerves , or would both of you pussy foot and be polite and not get anything done ..?

Would you tell your friends - that's a great guy - or not?

Robot rites and rituals

religious experiences started as a transcendental experiences, where the world gets re-mapped in the head, accompanied by feelings of bliss and timelessness. in Deleuzian terms, I suppose this is the self witnessing not just a line of flight ,but actual flight itself,  leaving the self behind, or rather, the de-territorialization of the self, and then watching it re-territorialize. (Cool caveat, upon de-territorialisation, there's no one left to stop the re-territorialisation, hence the inevitable descent).

religion in itself, then territorialised into a political thing.

The core method of religion is the acquisition, development, and deployment  of the power to ignore ; and the accompanying framework for its  sanctioning.

Good religion helps you ignore your immediate sense of suffering and loss,  allowing you to exert beyond and grow beyond.  Eventually it can lead to  loss of self, and the attached suffering, sometimes permanently.

Bad religion helps you ignore others' suffering, and allows for zero sum and pareto inefficient moves,  makes for great loot.

The difference falls under morality & ethics.

Hence the first precept is always non violence and non taking . It always starts with compassion.

.

Exercises for deferring gratitude form the first step of religious training. To the uninformed, it looks like self-inflicted suffering. Like fasting. Or doing a slow boring thing again and again. It is important that the context be kept in perspective, and self-inflicted-suffering  not be seen as a noble end in itself.

The next step is skill acquisition.

One needs to go past Aristotle and Confucius to reach Plato and Lao-tse, and often canmot leap-frog the first step (which is long arduous and many stepped)

Jeet Kune Do didn't spring forth from Bruce Lee's  brow magnificent and fully formed, it was a result of his mastering the many martial arts expending horrendous amounts of effort,  boxed in by iron discipline

a word on education

grammar and logic form the first bring in the edifice that is education.

arts provide a great medium for education. they train to improve sensory acuity. Drawing, painting, and sketching teach the eye to note details and distinguish between colours & shades, strokes,  and their effects. playing a musical instrument is an intensely cerebral task - reading the symbols in their notation, translating them to hand movements pertaining to the instrument, keeping in mind the melody/harmony while co-ordinating with others also doing the same. writing forces one to distil thoughts into a structured form. reading the classics stocks up the mind with many dilemmas one is bound to run into sooner or later

team sports teach deploying skills amidst alliances, uncertainty, and shared goals. Co-operation is the principle of which collective bargaining is the manifestation, and source of much wealth accumulation.

one key skill to acquire, is the skill of plugging away at learning and mastering a technique, and producing with it, until it is in the bone. all other skills are built using this skill.

now back to our regular programming...

The next step is combined execution coexisting with self programming.

Execution gets better with repetition and is hindered by environmental noise. For eg ideological differences . It is hard to behead a ravana if the ravana doesnt know and agrees at some level that he is deserving of a beheading.

Religion, with its claim on morality, deigns to tell you what is right,good, and true (phaedrus et al notwithstanding)

That makes for easy unblocked execution, and retreat to self programming to reconcile actions with the mind/soul-construct

Robots, if determinate, which by definition they are, cannot have intentions. Humans ,and programs, choose. Is there a non-deterministic element in  this choosing ? Probably not , I'd assume the machinations are not visible, but follow an algorithm, which doesn't involve tossing a coin as any of its steps.

Would driver-less cars have an algorithm to pick who to save/who to crash into ? (like will-smith in i-robot). if they could talk among themselves, would the discuss and form groups based on some sub-aspect of the algorithm applying to some scenario ?

 for one on the monk's path, the simple act of letting go, ironically brings more (I). consistent renunciation brings more and more.  priests probably set out to be monks and got tempted when they realised they could habitually advise kings, and therefore occupy a position higher than them in the society.

(i) there's an old zen saying (all zen sayings are old, the new ones haven't been repeated long enough, and are referred to as 'said-once-that-time-ing's ) which goes like this :

de-weeding the garden

 our brains are constantly making up stories about the world

i want to call these expedient hypothesis

there's no way to verify these hypotheses

damn you plato and your cave and your shadows

we step into these like neo (before he was neo) plugs into the matrix

the flickering shadow outside the window IS an evil spirit out to get us

the car heading towards us IS driven by an apathetic care-two-hoots wild animal

nifty is just  right for turning into a two-bagger

that bloke looks super honest and will do a good job

maybe i'll stick to my diet/workout plan  this time and come out as mr muscles

all stories

[if nothing is different from last time, doing the same thing just doubles your preference for soddy results

something needs to change each time, for the results to be any different ]

each story stops you from seeing the whole range of possibilities, by nature

what religion, philosophy, and conspiracy theories do, is provide an almost unverifiable hypothesis that refuses to be found unsuitable

eventually, they warp what one sees, and then all that one sees

alcohol probably washes away the patina of accumulated hypotheses/'facts'

but you need to wash away alcohol too, like hiring another hitman to take care of the earlier hitman you hired ....

but zen .... ?

"stopping and starting on a dime ..." as per S-Y, eventually brings home the lesson of anicca and anatman

why i need to read the raph koster book

 to build a game in Processing

and help make learning fun (cliche cliche)

why i need to read 'a pattern language'

 because philip greenspun said this in his review of the book -

```
A Pattern Language by Christopher Alexander and colleagues
Nominally about architecture and urban planning, this book has more wisdom about psychology, anthropology, and sociology than any other that I've read. Nearly every one of this volume's 1170 pages will make you question an assumption that you probably didn't realize you were making. In a section entitled "Four-Story Limit", Alexander notes that "there is abundant evidence to show that high buildings make people crazy." Underneath is a photo of San Franisco's Transamerica tower, captioned with a quote from Orwell's 1984:
"The Ministry of Truth--Minitrue, in Newspeak--was startlingly different from any other object in sight. It was an enormous pyramidal structure of glittering white concrete, soaring up terrace after terrace 300 metres in the air."
Alexander backs up this polemic with convincing arguments that high-rise living removes people too far from the casual society of the street, from children playing in the yard, and that apartment-dwellers therefore become isolated.
Alexander spends a lot of time in this book trying to figure out how to restore the damage to our communities that have been done by automobiles. He argues for better public spaces and for more integration of children, old people, and workers. He argues for more access to water by more people.
Many of Alexander's arguments are against the scale of modern systems. Public schools spend a fortune on building and administration precisely because they are so physically large [I've seen statistics showing that our cities spend only about one-third of their budgets on classrooms and teachers]. If we had shopfront schools and fired all the school system personnel who don't teach, we might be able to get student-teacher ratios down to 8 or 10:1 without an increase in cost. Similarly, Alexander argues for smaller retail shops, smaller factories (or at least identifiable small workgroups within factories rather than hundreds of faceless cogs) and more master/apprentice instruction.
What if you like the depredations of modernity and aren't interested in a utopian world where basic human needs are met? Can you learn anything about architecture from this guy? Absolutely. You'll learn that light is everything. Your bedroom has to have eastern light so that the sun wakes you up. Your best living quarters should have southern light. All the rooms should have light from at least two sides, otherwise there will be too much contrast and you'll just have to draw the shades. If you've got kids, make them sleep and play in their own wing of the house. Build a realm for yourself and your wife on a different floor. Meet the kids in the kitchen.
To avoid cluttering my apartment, I give away virtually all the books that I buy these days. I'm keeping this one and plan to re-read it every year.
the unreasonable effectiveness of
is... well .... quite unreasonable
 we keep a tab open, an item on the todo list, a reminder on a post-it, scribbled plans and goals in a notebook
waiting for the persona we wear,
to play out,  reach a logical end, and stop for a while,
or just take a break, long enough,
that we can take it off,  don another one -
one for whom the note was written, one that can
pick up that post-it, and make a poem, a story, go for a trek,  run that race
one that will learn that musical instrument..... one that can
sing that song of the soul,  midwife to the deep inner thoughts,
the soul at play, let out in the world, and
do the things that keep us sane,  a small but divine circle,
defining us by the promise of what's within
but,
sometimes the personas don't budge - the jobber, the family man,
they do not relent
and the little bits of gaiety and colour that wash up at our lives' door,
wait forever in our external memory systems
like flowers pressed into a book,
slowly desiccated
till only remains
but
dull repeated words "he went to the office, he watched the kids"
and dust of crumbled dreams
hurry, dear stranger,  build for me
a prison, as quickly as i build
one for you,
iron bands of need hidden
in ledger scribbles of ink
bind us to us
the first project, almost always a failure, serves as a survey
it is important that it captures the lay of the land
the goal is not the goal but the maps that are generated in the process
 philosophy is the brush we use to paint our canvas of thought
each tool - language, math, logic, etc are just single strands of that brush
 the persians had it right
wine, music, poetry
in the delusion
we take refuge
belief unshaken
 straight lines
are so so hard,
crook mine, i
with dented car, unkempt hair
self-deprecating
is there hope
 i love corporate jobs
if only for the steady stream
of stationery they
supply
in exchange for
soul
 there's something to be said
for transcendentalism
while the beer's not yet run dry
there's something in Tengrism
while the eagle can still fly
Sky Father &  Earth Mother
Wonder & Joy
threads of spirit
in my soul
 i will awake, arise now
and move back in with my mother
there a cozy nest of comics make
 on the map
many lines
 exploring fingers of man's
spread, quest
the land, the mother
becomes wife
dances, nurtures,
suffers
 walt whitman
is the debussy of poets
while, keats, and mozart
frown down
upon me
 and he knew
in an instant
that those days were gone
and they smiled, and nodded, as friends
and went their way,
again strangers
 alan watts passed through evanston, chicago, a long long time ago
Sunday, November 30, 2025
 what was central, and point, to Imperial Britain's unstoppable spread across the globe, was the mechanised weapon - the musket squad loading, firing, and reloading ad infinitum, made from easily source-able local parts, as long as it had hands to hold the musket, fingers to pull the trigger, and a mind to dress up, march around, and follow orders.
as if by magic, there suddenly popped up musket platoons all around the world, as if they waiting dormant all along. the life-long learning curves and career commitments of the sword  and spear were replaced by quick short training, and squads were ready to go topple kingdoms.
product placement came next. instead of continuing to only shoot their neighbours across the channel, the other invention, the corporation, took to the 'third-world', supplying (in actuality, leasing) the modern mechanised weapon of devastating effectiveness, to rajas  of this-stan who wanted to teach rajas of that-stan a lesson. eventually, the rajas realised that the weapons were not theirs, and neither was the sovereignity over the land
the rest of the industrial revolution came about as a means to make better faster bigger guns,  move more  troops, carrying said guns and munitions, and  later, administrators and their retinues.
given that  the earth is three-fourth's water, it is only fitting that a seafaring nation would take to it, like a fish to water
to be clear, it was the lend-lease program of musket-squads, of the EIC, that old chestnut debt ( hello graeber) that transformed the rest-of-the-world into colonies
 driving to the gym vs driving to the liquor shop is both driving
some self-help books focus on the former without the perspective and journey that set that context
 at around mid forties, as the kids edged past the squishy stage, the household switched to ghazals, classical based pop (carnatic/hindustani) , and curd rice.
alcohol doesn't seem to solve anything, but i heard persistence pays off...
